Technical FAQs
Unsurpassed industry support at any level.

Q: Can an author leave multiple dictations during a single phone-in session?
A: During the course of dictation, the author can press (#) twice to save the current dictation and return to the main menu. Then, simply press (1) to start a new dictation. During a call, every time a dictation is SAVED, a separate WAV file is created. Refer to the phone-in instruction sheet for more details.

Q: How can I cancel dictation during a phone-in session?
A: Because of the high rate of users mistakenly pressing the CANCEL option and deleting their dictation, this feature has been removed from the standard phone-in interface. This feature can be activated (at no charge) on an author-by-author basis.

Q: Am I charged for "dead time" during a phone-in dictation?
A: You are charged for ALL time that the author spends on the phone (not just the actual dictation). If the author needs to pause a dictation, they can simple press (#) to PAUSE, then press (1) to continue.

Q: What happens to the voice file if an author hangs up during phone-in dictation?
A: If the author disconnects the phone call, the audio file is saved and available for you immediately in the work queue. There is no way to call back and "continue" that dictation, but the author can begin a new dictation stating "this is a continuation...".

Q: Can I use the toll-free number outside of the United States?
A: The toll-free phone number is only available for the U.S.A. and Canada. A toll phone number can access the service worldwide, but you are responsible for all toll charges.

Q: Can the phone-in dictation use a cell phone?
A: The phone-in system can be used with mobile phones, land lines, and voice over IP (VOIP) phone systems.

Q: Why can't I upload or download files?
A: Most likely, you need to install the latest version of SUN java in your browser. To determine if your java version is out of date, click Java Test. If your java version must be updated, use the link at the bottom of that screen to automatically download/install the latest version of java from SUN Microsystem's web site. Note: when you first attempt to upload/download files, if you receive a Security Warning to trust the Persits Software Applet, click Always.

Q: How does the transcriptionist know that a new dictation is available for download?
A: When the dictation is complete, the transcriptionist can be notified by email that it's available for download. Email notification is a full featured benefit included in the service and can be configured to send emails based on rules that you define.

Q: Can I edit an email notification rule?
A: Email notification rules are not editable. You can simply delete the current rule and re-create it with the desired settings.

Q: What audio file formats can I upload?
A: You can upload any of these audio file formats: DCT, DSS, DVF, ICS, MP3, MSV, SND, WAV, WMF.

Q: What transcribed file formats can I upload?
A: You can upload any of these document file format: DOC, DOT, PDF, WPD, TXT.

Q: Are there any "reserved characters" that I cannot use when I name my files?
A: The following characters are reserved and cannot be used when you upload your files: . / * ; : ! # & ? " ' $

Q: Are the line counts for my uploaded transcribed documents displayed on my billing reports?
A: The total time of phone-in minutes and file disk space is shown on your billing report. You are responsible for determining the line counts for each author.

Q: Can I use AOL Explorer or FireFox?
A: Some versions of AOL Explorer will not allow the user to upload or download files. The MetroScript service has been tested and developed for Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 or higher. Other browsers, including FireFox, may not function correctly.

Q: Can I use a Macintosh?
A: The MetroScript service has not been tested on a Macintosh.
